Ok, after three days of down time, the server is back up. I tried to upgrade the OS but half way through the updating, the server started spitting out errors right and left and then when the upgrading finally finished, the server wouldn't boot. I tried to plug in the back up server but that one was all jacked up too which makes no sense because it was working fine like two months ago when they were both online and nothing has changed between then and now.
Woohoo! I was telling NOPAL like a month ago that I go to these meetings at work with other guys that do the same thing I do and they get talking about all this stuff they are working on and it gets me thinking 'Man, I'm no where near as good as these other guys' but then recently two I've my javascripts I've written have become the standard. Shweet! The first one was a cookie script I made for a treasure hunt game and the second one was to make sure registration stays secure.
We use to have a treasure hunt script about four years ago but the guy who wrote it left and nobody bothered to document how it was done. So when I had to do my treasure hunt, I couldn't track the old code or anybody that remembered it down. After reading some books, I was able to come up with a simple cookie script and some Flash action scripting and after an artist made it look all nice, it was a big sucess and we ended up using it again like three weeks later with even more Flash interaction on another site. Then I was approached by another team and they have used it on two even bigger treasure hunts.
The registration one was we had to make all registration secure because there was an incident where somebody was able to crack creditcard information from a movie club type site. A plan was started to make sure all registration was secure. As I was working on securing all my reg pages, I started thinking I'm going to need some way to make the reg check itself to see if it is secure and if not, to make it so because I didn't want to go through all the sites pointing to reg and changing them. The team in charge of testing all the registration to make sure it was secure noted that if you made the reg insecure, in some cases it would never change itself back to secure and that was a problem. I gave my code to the person in charge of securing the registrations and he sent it out to the whole team as required code. That's about fifty different registrations in L.A. and Seattle.
Sorry. Just had to give myself an 'attaboy' since other people always seem to get them for doing a half ass job.
Also with this secure registration stuff, it's amazing how people don't bother to read e-mails when you are trying to help them get a project like this done or they read them but don't seem to understand them. An engineer and I were the leads on this project since I had done the initial secure registration and he was keeping tabs on my progress and problems associated with the update. We had e-mails going out several times a day stating what had to be done and people were not doing it right or had no idea it was going on at all. Some people even tried to make it look like my https checking code was their idea. Man, this is starting to sound like a rant. I'm off to play Unreal Tournament 2004 demo.
I was just checking out the Unreal Tournament 2004 demo server I am running and the pings are really good. The DOH! Network servers page doesn't list the pings the same as if you were to view them in-game. One player right now has a ping of 11. The rest are all in the 20s. And that's with eight player. Nice! There's also a Deathcon server now running the same config. Stay tuned for a Game Republic one coming soon.
I was talking to Uniballer today and he just picked up a copy of Call of Duty over the weekend so I will have to start up that server again too.
It's Super Trailer Tuesday woooooo!!! Check out new trailers for Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Robots and Madagascar over on the Spiff Trailers page.
Shweet! I was messing with the config on the UT2004 demo and got it to rotate all the game types and use all the maps that are available in the demo. I think I need to adjust it a bit though because everybody quits when it switches from deathmatch to capture the flag. It was good to get a couple of rounds on again after not playing anything for the last couple of months. Download the demo and try it for yourself.
Construction begins on Monday to convert the third car parking area in my garage to an extra room. I have to go take some pictures of it in the before state. I should have done it while it was still a mess but didn't think about it till just now. I also have to finish putting up the shelves in the garage so I can get the last of the stuff that was in the third car area out of the way.
I tried a little Galactic Conquest this morning on the DOH! Network server. It's going to take some getting use to. I'm thinking I like Desert Combat better.
I haven't had a chance to try the new Tribes: Vengeance multi-player demo yet. There's no Linux dedicated server for it and it's using the Unreal Tournament engine so I've kind of lost interest. Not to say the UT engine isn't good but for some reason, it has a weird feel to me. Not to say I never play it. In fact I'm running a UT2004 demo server right now. You can see who's playing on it by checking out the DOH! Network servers page. The demo server is compatible with the retail version of UT2004 so if you own it you can jump in. If you don't have UT2004, you can get the demo from File Planet or 3D Gamers.
Well, I didn't rush out and buy the new Star Wars DVD like everybody else but I did start a Galactic Conquest server on the DOH! Network. If you have Battlefield 1942, download the free Star Wars mod (you'll need the full v4 client and v4.2 patch*) and check it out. I'll be right in as soon as I get all my Punk Buster files up to date. You can check out the DOH! Network servers page and see who's online.
